Upcoming Shows
So I know that we all signed up on ‘Upcoming’ but I haven’t had the same patience for it that I have in the past, so anyone got plans for any shows soon?

Hey guys – my friend, vocals virtuoso, and all around nice guy Ryan Groff is playing tomorrow (Tues) night at Uncommon Ground (Clark and Grace) at 9:00. They serve both types of drinks (beer and coffee), and it’s free. If you haven’t heard me talk about him before: “http://www.myspace.com/ryangroffmusic”
Yo!
There are a lot of shows coming up that I’m considering going to. And I’m too lazy to list all the shows on here as well but I’ve updated my ‘Upcoming’ list.
Simon has a piece of his being performed next Wednesday, the 12th, at 7PM at the Chicago Cultural Center. It’s free, and it involves a recorder quartet.
I added this post to the “Timeless!” category, so it should be showing up in the footer of every page soon~
Does anyone have tickets for Destroyer or man man. I was gonna buy tickets but wanted to see if anyone was going.
I am planning on buying a Man Man ticket soon. I have seen them a lot already, but I really like their live show and I am interested in seeing Yeasayer.
I know that Leah and Kara already have tickets to this show.
I think I am going to pass on the Destroyer since I don’t have tons of disposable cash right now and while I like him, he isn’t my favorite (Although I had lots of fun when we all drank at Christina’s and stumbled over to the show at the Abbey to heckle Electric Magnolia Co. before Bejar came on and rocked it!)
I’m still debating Destroyer…LSA is not my favorite place to see a show. I still don’t care for Man Man. Does this make me less of a Man?
I am a negative ninny. I’ll go to Destroyer.
In going to destroyer and man man. Man man has been hit and miss the last couple times but yeasayer was good at schubas last month. Anybody else seeing black mountain this sat? I hope somebody else is going to these shoes bc I’m going solo and want friends. Sniff**
I’d like to go, but that’s right smack in the middle of my finals. Somebody want to record the Destroyer show for me?
I bought Man Man tickets.
I want to go to Destroyer, but back to back concerts stress me out because I’m old and lame…
so I’m gonna think about it some more.
Matt, how was the Black Mountain show? I wanted to go, but I was already planning on being in the burbs for the holiday. I missed them the last time they came around too, but JJ and Lauren said they were AMAZING.
So, lollapalooza tickets are on sale now for about $200. According to the website, the lineups will be announced on April 7. Radiohead’s website has them coming to Chicago in August, so I think they probably will play lollapalooza.
Anybody going to this or pitchfork? I may be on call one of these weekends, but I’m willing to buy tickets in advance.
On more thing, Radiohead is playing St. Louis in May on a Wednesday. This would be a cheaper option for those who don’t want to go to lollapalooza.
I’ve got tix for Lolla. No Pitchfork, unless I get a free ticket.
New Ptichfork additions. I love Pulp. I love Ghostface.
“The Pitchfork Music Festival is adding some heavy hitters to its lineup, including Dinosaur Jr., Mission of Burma, Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker and Wu-Tang Clan rappers Ghostface and Raekwon”
Hey, maybe Smatter can sell shit at the festival and get free admission again.
I am not planning on going to Lolla at all. To $$$ and crowded. I think I am just going to Saturday’s P-fork. Hangover brunch at Leah’s all day Sunday!
And if there is anything I want to catch on Sunday I will probably just hang out by the fountain and play in the water.
Also, KEXP will be broadcasting from P-fork this year
Will KEXP have a van? I can’t believe y’all are willing to go to this Pitchfuck fest again…I seem to remember some bad stuff happening last year to one of our friends…
I’ve got no problems going to Pitchfork this year, and will be there, with my ?Criminal? shirt on.
Fuck Lollapalooza:
http://planckstudios.com/news/2007/aug/04/where-my-lollapalooza/
I say we rain down waterbaloooon mayhem on the lolla-attendees. We will need jumpsuits.
I may be up for the dirty projectors this week.
I think I want a new group of friends.
JJ-So the commodification of Pitchfork is ok? The commodification of Lollapalooza never got one of my friends arrested…
Ok, I’ve thought it over, and I don’t want a new group of friends, but one thing puzzles me…(names changed for the internet)
Do you all not remember how horrible Mr. Man’s arrest was last year? Do you not remember arguing with that beefy security guy? Do you not remember all of our buzzes being killed? Do you not remember the night being ruined, with phone calls to lawyers, trips to two different police stations, and the mystery of Mr. Man’s detainment “backstage”? Do you not remember that fucking bitch at the Fuze tent? With the amount of screaming and anguish last year, why in the hell would you give the promoters of this event the benefit of ANY doubt?
Do you remember the AWFUL sound on the side stage? Or the awful sound on Friday night on all stages? We paid to hear bands, and often, you couldn’t hear them…Plus, it was massively oversold, even beyond Lollapalooza in terms of people per square foot. That event sucked, and it will continue to suck, and I am clueless why anyone who went through the crap we did last year would even consider attending it.
I’ll be quiet now.
Yay Tom.
Fuck Pitchfork too.
i agree that these big festivals suck for a variety reasons: stupid corporate sponsors, crowded as fuck, and sub-quality sound. i don’t think much has changed over the years, however. these are the same things i’ve been complaining about at large-type concerts for the last 15 years or so (including earlier lollapaloozas).
it’s also unfortunate that all these bands hitch their wagons to these festivals and don’t do small shows over the summer. use some of those creative juices, guys, and come up with something a little different.
all that said, i’ll probably be at pitchfork this summer. the reasons being that i don’t get to see many shows in rockford, it’s still a reasonable price, and i don’t blame the organizers for what happened to our friend last year.
considering that it was ridiculously crowded last year, i’ll go for just the last few bands of the day. if there’s anyone i want to hear earlier in the day, i’ll go rock out by the fountains. unless pitchfork finally allows re-entry. c’mon you bastards!
Tom, I’m with you!! I may go Saturday night to Pitchfork but other than that I think I’ll be fountaining it up with Dana. I’ll of course still have a party because I want to see how you bastards will top the kitchen flood of last year!
I haven’t bought them yet but I plan on buying Lollapalooza tickets too so JJ please try to avoid hitting me when you start your waterballoon mayhem!
I think matt’s got the right idea about a shared calendar.
Maybe I just like the pretty grid as opposed to a list.
Tom, hey, my thoughts:
Platitude-filled version: Corporations exist, some people in this world suck, and shit happens.
In non-platitude version: We could address specific problems, like “What can be done about the crappy taste and inflated price of Fuze Beverages?” or, “What can be done about the corporate relationships Pitchfork chooses to engage in?” We could vote to not participate with Pitchfork and its endeavors. I mean heck, I’ve probably been on the pitchfork website three times since last summer. Yes, going to the music festival is supporting the commoditization of Pitchfork (one of many ways to look at that action). Not attending the music festival because of that Fuze nastiness allows those Fuze Beverage hosebeast nutjobs to continue to fuck with our lives and actions.
Those hosebeast nutjobs are done fucking with my life.
Joe-my problems isn’t with corporate relationships/commercialization/commoditization per se…I am very anti-corporate personally but recognize the necessity of corporate money in most large artistic endeavors. My problem lies with organization accepting and using corporate money and power but not putting on the best possible performance for the paying customers.
Basically: if Pitchfork takes money from Fuze and their ilk, get a real sound system on ALL stages. Anything less is a rip-off, which last year was. I wanted to hear Fujiya and Miyagi, they were a top-3 reason for me to attend. Unfortunately, I could not, because Pitchfork decided to say “screw the fans, let’s put as many possible stages in this park. Hell, let’s put one in the corner, behind the tents, and get some of the most buzzed-about artists, like Girl Talk, Dan Deacon and F & M to play there. That way, we can sell more tickets!”
Add hosebags to the mix…what you get is a terrible festival, probably the worst I’ve ever attended.
Yeah, I haven’t attended that many festivals, don’t have much to compare it to.
Being an employee of a corporation that makes mistakes daily (and then, usually, corrects them), I’d say that Pitchfork ought to have admitted they made some errors. However, there was only one arrest over the entire festival weekend, which isn’t much (even if it was based on lies from the lips of the employees of Fuze Beverage and the security company — lies that those cowards had no intention of attesting to while under oath).
Just bought Lollapalooza tickets!
Dang – I haven’t been on here in awhile and I’ve missed this great long thread of trashing corporate America?! Fuck the man! Wait, am I basically the man now? Fuck me!
Dana: the Black Mountain show was fantastic. They played for almost 2 hours, the bottle was relatively empty so I stood front and center, and they sounded amazing. I might put it in my top 5 shows ever. Well, top 10 for sure.
Festivals: I bought Lolla and Sat/Sun Pitchfork. I basically think Pitchfork sucks balls, and used to feel the same about Lolla, too. But, once Lolla signed up with Texas-based L3 (I think that’s their name) to handle all the sound, it’s been pretty amazing I think. They made their name doing ACL, and when I went down there last year, I thought Lolla was actually even better than that giant/iconic venue. I think they’ve gotten a ton of really great press for finally putting together great sound in giant outdoor areas, so I’m hoping and X’ing all my fingers that THIS will be the year Pitchfork gets their shit together. Given how impressed I was with Lolla last year, and after seeing the lineup for this year, I’m actually really excited about it.
Two more items:
1) check out the band Marked Men. I just came across them, but they’ve been around for awhile. Poppie-punk a la Smoking Popes, and genuinely feel good dance music.
2) the Champaign music festival called Pygmalion, which usually sucks balls, and is run by a guy/burnout that I’m sorta friends with, actually has an impressive lineup this year. It’s not for awhile, but if anybody is interested in attending, maybe we can get a group together: “http://sixeyes.blogspot.com/2008/04/raidohead-live-at-bbc-april-108-mp3s.html”
oops, wrong link:
Any of you going to ManMan/Yeasayer….I know a bunch of people mentioned going but wanted to see who actually has tickets.
I’ll be at MM/Yeasayer on Wed and Destroyer on Thurs. I might also go check out Scotland Yard Gospel Choir at Schubas tonight as they’re doing the monday night rehersal slot show this month. If it was like Frisbie the other month, it should only be like $5, which is about all I’m wiilling to put in for them.
On a slightly related note, I came across this radio station in LA called Indie 103. They stream and it’s not bad at all:
I just got back from Iceland and unlike my prior trip there this past summer, I actually spent time in Reykjavik this time and actively tried to seek out new music. They listen to some weird shit over there. If you think Bjork can be odd, it only gets crazier from there.
Dana and I will be at that Fire match at UIC, then we’ll be heading to man man/yeasayer.
Just bought my Man Man/Ysayer tix, so I will be there for sure (hopefully not late due to soccer shenanigans)
Then I’ll see you there! I’m pretty sure Lauren is going as well. Thursday I’m going to see HotChip.
I might go check out the Hot Chip DJ set at Smartbar after the Destroyer show on Thurs
Thursday night Smartbar DJ sets typically cause massive Friday office hangovers….but are usually worth it!
It wouldn’t be Friday if I didn’t have a hangover at work
Send me the details about Roller Derby!
