The loss of Rachel Blumberg (not on The Crane Wife) puts The Decemberists (4 dudes, 1 chick) dead even w/ The Comas (4 dudes, 1 chick). But Nicole Gehweiler (Comas) could easily destroy both the ghost of Blumberg and Jenny Conlee with just her hot fucking hair.

The Decemberists: Albums can reference 8th century Irish poems and album art has cute color coordinated outfits + ascots

The Comas: Albums range in conceptual references from sci-fi to fantasy to anti-country and some albums are fleshed out w/ animated DVD song pairings

Gosh, this is a close one. Both bands can clearly build melodic suites to grand effect – the scope of their vision consistently outdone by each followup album. Good thing The Comas albums don’t make me want to gnaw on broken glass.

Live Show

The Decemberists: Headlined at Pitchfork 2005. Yep. If you don’t remember it’s ok, you can buy the illustrated children’s book online.

The Comas: I have never seen The Comas live. And I know that I am less cool for it, for serious. They will be playing at SubT.

The Decemberists: Assflutes everywhere will be drool-mouthing the wrong words to anti-climactic songs. Plus suburbanites.

The Comas: Assflutes spontaneously combust when within earshot of The Comas music.

I’m really impressed with the fight The Decemberists are putting up. They’re clearly in contention. And I’m sure could last another 10 rounds, what with all the pixie dust and fairy powder in their veins.

By: jj - What happened to the 'I'm listening to this' crap? Tom turned me onto the new Islands. The second half of the album is good in an old destroyer sort of way. The first half is more poppy, but still good. Also - the new Spiritualized is lovey-dovey-druggy good.

It's long, but there's not much wasted movement or repetition. It's exactly what a rock record should be, and will probably be my #1 at the end of the year.

I believe the Decemberists sicked their infamous whale on the Comas’ ass last night!!

But I will say Pritzker’s acoustics makes anything sound good. Plus they had a ginormous ochestra backing them up.

I guess after all JJ’s Comas humping I expected the show to make me weep from shear awe…..didn’t shead a tear, lil’ disappointed. But I do believe I lost an eardrum somewhere last night!

Oddly enough it started to rain LITERALLY the second the Decemberists finished.

Yes yes – he is a strong god. But the decemberists did make him cry in the end.

The Comas were good – their sound was huge and when the let loose on their instruments they were in their zone and the crowd dug it. But the more subtle moments in their albums were lost – Andy’s voice couldn’t do what he wanted it to – it was pretty apparent he was frustrated.

A couple time it felt like the drummer was ahead of the rest of the band – train wreck – but they recovered – then rocked.

I’d see them again. For sure.

i heard the decemberists sucking all the way up in rogers park. seriously, you all should stop talking or thinking about about them. to help you with this process, i promise that this is the final thing i will ever say about them. now i’m gonna bang my head really hard against my desk, and i hope to damage the section of the brain that contains all my decemberists memories. my god, i hope it works.
