2006 Faves
I’ll be away from my PC after Friday morining, so hear ya go (pun intended).
1. Mission of Burma: “The Obliterati”
Burma definitely brings it. With an increasing wuss-factor in indie rock, it’s good to hear a bunch of old-timers who still have balls. One of the best bands (all members are vital to the group) of the post-punk era and today.
2. TV on the Radio: “Return to Cookie Mountain”
Any other band sound as fresh this year?
3. Belle & Sebastian: “The Life Pursuit”
Best production work on B&S ever. They have a bass player!? Who knew? Not their best album lyrically or emotionally, but the songs are catchy, dammit.
4. Jens Lekman: “Oh, You’re So Silent Jens”
Jens walks a fine line between hokey-good and cheesy-bad for me. The scales are tipped in his favor maybe cuz he’s a foreigner or cuz he knows what he’s doing. I dunno.
5. Man Man: “Six Demon Bag”
If you can’t enjoy a Man Man show, you’re either completely apathetic, or you’re better off spending your time looking at condos.
6. Destroyer: “Rubies”
Ah, the gravitas. From now on, he’s gotta limit himself to one “la, la, la” moment an album, however.
7. Beirut: “Gulag Orkestar”
Burned out on the road. Not surprised.
8. The M’s: “Future Women”
Local faves (Chicago). ‘Darling Lucia’ and the first track on the new Sparklehorse album inspired by the same Beatles song?
9. Clipse: “Hell Hath No Fury”
Music I can listen to after watching “The Wire”.
10. Headlights: “Kill Them With Kindness” Local faves (Urbana).
The lyrics hold it back, I’ll admit.
11. Sonic Youth: “Rather Ripped”
Good guitar stuff. ‘Incinerate’ is my favorite single of the year.
12. Love Is All: “9 Times That Same Song”
Fun.
