   I say dell – get a 15.4″ core duo and pay the extra money for the 3 year onsite warranty.

   Get one with 1 gig of ram and at least 60gigs of space for your tunes. If you spec one out and send me the cart. I’ll look and see if i can get a better deal w/ my discounts.

   ipod format is almost meaningless…save your files elsewhere beforehand and just reformat it, no biggie.

   get a mac. a used/refurbished powerbook g4 with a gig of ram (or even half a gig) is all you’d really need for the programs you mention. the newer macs (w/ the intel chips) run both mac OS X and windows software too via bootcamp so if you’re dying to keep using a program with the (awful) windows format you can.

   i was a microsoft/PC guy from about 1986 thru last year. yeah, macs are a bit more expensive but OS X is remarkably stable and not nearly as vulnerable to attack as windows. not having to run a huge spyware blocker/virus checker in the background is a nice bonus too.

   And i don’t recommend buying a computer w/out a warranty – dell offers next day onsite service with their warranties – that’s a big reason why i recommend them.

   As a lifelong pc user normally i would recommend a dell, however get a mac…they work better…dont have viruses and wont screw up as much as pcs…GET A MAC!

   Here’s a good solution – go to a store and use both the systems and ask your questions for to a ‘qualified sales professional’.

   I personally can’t use macs. Maybe you could – but i can’t recommend them.

   I would actually like a Mac (I used them all through college). My only concern is that I will lose all my software. Friends got me copies of Dreamweaver, Illustrator and Photoshop and I can’t fathom a computer without them. It would basically translate into being a jukebox at that point. One guy told me there is a site where you can download a lot of that stuff Kazaa-style, I just am not aware/saavy enough to know it for a fact.

   If I can find a way to get those applications for a Mac, that is the direction I will take. Otherwise….Dude, I’m getting a Dell…

    you must be a republican, jj. rather than argue with facts, you make fun. here’s an article (admittedly almost 2 years old) that has this nice fact in it: dell has 18% market share but about 57% of all consumer complaints. the numbers have probably changed a bit. eat it, rushbo.

    I provided A and B – two frames of thought — if you watched A, you’d have hard facts about the subject and if you read B you’d see the social stigma that comes with being a ‘fan’ and not a ‘user’ – that is the mac experience.

    i rescind my earlier insult but still say this: i’m not so much recommending a mac as unrecommending a pc. i’ve lost SO much data and had so many problems with each of the last 4 pcs i’ve owned (including two dells) that i can’t recommend with good conscience anyone use one. in total, i lost about half of my honors thesis, 30 gigs of music files, and two years of my journal (some was backed up but was a bitch to put back together) and spent way too much time virus checking and spyware tracking (and obviously failing at this task). two separate hard drives have completely failed. the blue screen of death became like a brother to me.

    i think niles recently had a complete crash as well.

    pcs take way too much effort and provide way too few results for me. my mac has not been without problems (i had to get the logic board replaced right off the bat, and dealing with apple was not the most pleasant experience) but i’ve had NO software problems. there’s no right mouse button, which is stupid, but i’ve gotten used to it.

    jj (almost?) exclusively uses PCs and windows, from what i gather, and he definitely knows his way around a computer. when shit breaks, he knows how to fix it. and while i’m not a complete novice, i definitely yield to him when it comes to computer knowledge…but that’s what leads into my final point: unless you’re an extremely knowledgeable and patient user, the windows operating system is a drag to productivity. for the most part, os x lets you do your work with fewer maintainance interruptions.

    Hey, both of you are right. And speaking of hard drives: it’s mostly luck when yours will fail next. Most folk (myself included) don’t prepare for it, because they don’t believe it will happen to them, until it happens to them. SyncBack is a solid freeware backup application…however, it’s PC-only…
