fun beirut show

let me set this up…

the album’s pretty good. it’s not gonna be on your top 10 of the year or nuthin’, but i would put ‘postcards from italy’ and ‘scenic world’ on a best of 2006 mix.

i thought the concert might be fun, because of the intrumentation on the album and cuz the beirut’s only like 19 years old…so he’s gotta be having fun on the road right? also, the show was on a friday night (not a school night!), and we don’t get many indie acts down here, so i went to check it out.

the concert was at the independent media center in urbana, which apparently is part of an old post office. it’s kinda difficult to find (the buzz magazine should really post the venue address with the show blurb) until i see a pack of indie kids smoking on the steps of some old government-type building. despite the difficulty in finding it, i gotta approve of the place. the sound’s good, there are couches to sit on, art lying around, some kid (not indie, but 10 years old) selling water and cookies, and it’s byob.

that last part is probably what made the show for me, but it was totally appropriate because beirut came out with a bottle of whiskey in hand. booze seems to go well with the eastern european gypsy-esque, all-a-shambles, somehwhat melancholy music. and i’ve said it before, but i am definitely a fan of horns (also accordian, which i haven’t mentioned before).

well, the band looked like they where having a shit-load of fun despite being weary from the road. they were all underage i think, except for the one older-brother-looking dude. the crowd got into the music, and some people brought their own percussion instruments to join in on their favorite songs.

the show ended with a cover of the song ‘brazil’ which was the perfect way to end it. it seems like more people would cover that song, but i’ve never heard it done live. if james was in attendance, i’m sure he would sang along with me.

good times were had, and i would say go check out the band if they’re in your town. put a few belgians in you beforehand, and you’ll be set.
